Harbour Station Announces New Non-Smoking Regulations

For Immediate Release SAINT JOHN, Dec. 12, 2010 – Harbour Station has announced plans to strengthen its non-smoking policy.

Effective Jan. 1, 2011, smoking will be prohibited within ten metres (approximately 33 feet) of the building. The new non-smoking regulations are designed to further protect patrons from second-hand smoking exposure.

“Smoking has been prohibited inside Harbour Station from when we opened 17 years ago,” said Michael Caddell, general manager. “The decision to provide a smoke-free zone outside the building is consistent with practices at most major arenas throughout North America.”

Caddell noted that there have been numerous requests from building patrons to address the smoking issue.

Harbour Station’s decision to expand its smoke-free zone has been applauded by the New Brunswick Lung Association.

Dr. Barbara MacKinnon, president and CEO of the association, said her organization regularly receive complaints from those who “have to walk through a wall of smoke as they enter an arena.

“People love the sporting events not just because of the competition, but also because these games are healthy pursuits,” she said. “Exposure to second-hand smoke is definitely unhealthy. Scientific studies show that it can cause cancer, long-term chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and aggravate asthma.”
